Gang whanau seeking better future
Green MP Marama Davidson has praised women associated with one of the country’s largest gangs who are trying to improve the lives of their whanau.
Ms Davidson says the wahine approached her because of her stand on the need for a more sustainable approach to gang problems and for alternatives to prison.
She attended a hui in Hamilton at the weekend, which drew together about 400 gang whanau from the Waikato to take part in activities and hear from speakers on entrepreneurship, tikanga and woman’s issues.
"Family day, tamariki everywhere, it felt like a marae. I was really privileged and honoured to be part of it and I will go to meet with the very people who feel distanced from our political processes, the very people who feel excluded and marginalised. Those are the priorities I have had over my activist and political career," Ms Davidson says.
