Tuwharetoa Maori Trust Board’s commercial arm has increased its stake in the tourism sector by buying the Lake Taupo Hole in One Challenge.

The attraction, in which customers hit a bucket of golf balls from the shore to a pontoon with golf holes floating on the lake 100 metres way, is consistently rated as of the area’s top tourist attractions since it opened 24 years ago.

Taupo Moana Group Holdings chair Tiwana Tibble says it’s an iconic brand and a successful business.

Tuwharetoa already benefits from the business, picking up an annual licence fee for its use of the lake.

The facility averages a hole-in-one every two weeks in one of the three holes on the pontoon.

However, punters rarely strike the ball into the red-flagged hole which is the size of a normal golf hole and carries a $10,000 prize.
