A leading Green strategist says a National-Green coalition is extremely unlikely and people should wait for the 380,000 special votes to be counted before speculating on an outcome.
Jack McDonald was too far down the list to make it into parliament this time even if the Greens pick up a seat or two from the specials, although he remains in his parliamentary job for now.
He says the Blue-Green talk is being driven by National.
Any decision about which way the Greens go, must be made by a special general meeting of members but the party’s focus throughout the election has been changing the government and pushing its own kaupapa.
"Those kaupapa, whether it’s being a world leader in the fight against climate change, whether it’s restoring the mauri of all our awa in Aotearoa, whether it’s taking real action in ending poverty, you look at those issues and it’s clear that it will be incredibly hard to come to any sort of arrangement with the National Party because that stands in direct contradiction to their priorities," Mr McDonald says.
