Auckland votes conditionally for Maori ward

Auckland Councillors want Maori seats, but they have thrown the task of getting them back on the new Government.
Councillors voted 10-5 for a proposal from councillor Alf Filipaina that a Maori seat be established, subject to a law change allowing the seat to be in addition to the current 20 seat limit rather than instead of one of the existing wards.
Mayor Phil Goff supports the creation of a Maori seat, saying he wanted Auckland to be an inclusive and united city.
The procedural move means the council avoids the risk of its decision triggering a binding referendum.
