Green MP Marama Davidson says the party has a lot of work to do to boost voter participation.
Turnout for the election was just under 79 percent, 1 point up on 2014, but the turnout in the Maori seats was about 15 points lower.
There are still more than 380,000 special votes to be counted, and on past form the Greens could add another MP to their current seven.
Ms Davidson says it's bittersweet to be back in parliament with 5.9 percent of the vote, but without the likes of Metiria Turei, Denise Roche and Mojo Mathers.
She says the fall-out from Ms Turei's admission she had collected benefit payments wrongly, showed where some of the gaps are.
"We have got work to do to inspire and engage with those of our people who just don't see anything relevant in politics for them and I saw some inklings of that sort of work we could do when Metiria told her story and announced our welfare policy," Ms Davidson says.
She's proud of the volunteers who helped keep the Green vote in Tamaki Makaurau above the national average.
