Jet fuel spill kills taonga species

Ruakaka hapu Patuharakeke is concerned at the leak of fuel from pipeline taking aircraft fuel between the Marsden Point refinery and Auckland airport.
Board member Juliane Chetham says the hapu was concerned at the way the leak was downplayed when it first happened, and it is still waiting for information like ground water monitoring reports.
She has inspected the site where the pipeline was damaged, possibly by a digger seeking swamp kauri.
"It looks as though when it initially happened there could have been a plume of fuel that may have gone further under the highway through the culvert and potentially to the Ruakaka River. I saw dead tuna in the drain so there has been an immediate impact in the vicinity of the spill that affected our taonga species," Ms Chetham says.
Patuharakeke is also concerned at proposals to dredge the entrance to the harbour to improve access to the port.
