Capital gains still on Green tax agenda
Greens' Tamaki Makaurau candidate Marama Davidson says a capital gains tax is an essential step into turning houses into homes rather than investments.
The Greens have rekindled National's tax attack on Labour by suggesting part of the price was early introduction on the tax – despite Labour trying to defuse the attack by ruling out implementing any recommendations of the tax working group until after the 2020 election.
Ms Davidson says Maori have borne the brunt of the housing crisis and homelessness, and they need help now.
"A capital gains tax is one thing, and we can't look at it on its own, but i's one thing of the many things that need to happen for us to make houses more available, more affordable, and to make them stop being used too much as a business instead of as a home," she says
Ms Davidson says the enthusiastic response to former co-leader Metiria Turei at the Otara Market on Saturday shows that Maori and Pacific people understand and appreciated her courage in highlighting issues of poverty.
