Lincoln study puts price on Whanau Ora
Research to be released today will show how investment in Whanau Ora pays not just in social and cultural terms but financially.
Helen Leahy, the chief executive of Te Putahitanga o Te Waipounamu, says Lincoln University researchers were asked to measure the work done by her South Island Whanau Ora commissioning agency against both a social values framework and a cost benefit analysis.
She says the right intervention in a young person’s life has the potential to increase their lifetime earnings.
"That has been shown by one case study in particular, He Toki ki te Mahi, which is a trade training initiative – every $1 invested in He Toki ki te Mahi has a return of seven," Ms Leahy says.
Labour yesterday promised to put an extra $5 million a year into Whanau Ora and conduct a review to ensure not just commissioning agencies and providers but government agencies improve the delivery of services.
