Restored cottage of Tawhiao reopens
A small cottage that once housed King Tawhiao was reopened at the base of Mangere mountain, in a dawn ceremony in the weekend.
The two roomed whare was restored over a number of years when it was relocated from it's original site near Auckland airport about 7 years ago.
According to Tainui tribal leader Rahui Papa and with the support of Tawhiao's whanau and the Manukau Council the whare is a now a significant landmark of Auckland particularly South Auckland history.
" As a reminder of the association of the Kingitangi and Te Waiohua and all those types of things around the South Auckland. I want to acknowledge the (old) Manukau City Council, who decided to remove and to restore the whare", says Rahui Papa
