The next cohort of young Maori wanting to step up to governance roles will start their training tomorrow in an innovative programme from Auckland-based consultancy Te Whare Hukahuka.
Director Shay Wright says support for the programme shows young Maori are keen to translate their passion for community into action.
There were 45 on last year’s pilot course, and between them they now hold 63 positions on iwi, hapu, marae, councils and businesses.
While last year’s course relied on financial support from iwi, this year corporates also stepped up.
"Often it’s been through corporates who want their young people to grow in their careers and that governance skill set, that strategic thinking, innovation, understanding impact models, how to be part of boards, how to take risk out of new ventures, those kinds of skill sets are useful professional development tools," Mr Wright says.
