Shell Todd drilling refresh opposed
Submissions close today on a bid by Shell Todd Oil Services to drill 22 more wells in the Maui field in the South Taranaki Bight.
Climate Justice Taranaki says the application is deficient because the company can’t tell the Environmental Protection Authority what chemicals it will use and discharge in the operation.
Spokesperson Emily Bailey says the area is home and feeding ground to many marine mammals including Maui’s dolphin and blue whale.
She says the companies and the Government need to be told the fossil fuel age is over and climate change must be considered.
"The Government is bending over backwards. They are doing all this stuff about best practice and having the best regulations in the world but basically they are letting them do what they want, how they want," Ms Bailey says.
She says despite the field being near the end of its productive life, Shell Todd has no culturally and environmentally acceptable decommissioning plan for its sites nor sufficient insurance in place for any major accidents.
A submission form is available on the Climate Justice Taranaki website website at: http://www.climatejusticetaranaki.info/stop-stos.
