Gambling ad ban sets good example
A Maori public health campaigner has welcomed Australia’s decision to ban gambling advertising in live sports broadcasts on television.
Antony Hawke from Hapai Te Hauora says in New Zealand gambling is a $2.2 billion industry and growing, with Maori gambling also on the increase.
He says the laws around gambling advertising have always been looser across the Tasman, so it’s good to see politicians there addressing the normalisation of betting,
"The thing that’s quite strong in this approach is they are addressing the advertising, because advertising is a common issue that comes up when we talk about minimising the harm of alcohol, tobacco, sugar drinks and gambling, so this is a positive stance for decision makers to see that you can address harm by restricting the advertising.
