Accolade for Ngati Porou Carving book
Ngarino Ellis from Ngapuhi and Ngati Porou has won a best first book award at the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards for A Whakapapa of Tradition: 100 Years of Ngati Porou Carving 1830-1930, which was in the Illustrated Non-Fiction category.
That category was won A History of New Zealand Women by Dunedin writer and historian Barbara Brookes, described as a sweeping survey that shows exactly when, how and why gender mattered.
Professor Brookes argues that concepts of home, marriage and family brought by settler women, and integral to the developing state, transformed the lives of Maori women.
The $50,000 Acorn Foundation Fiction Prize went to Ngaruawahia writer Catherine Chidgey for her fourth novel, The Wish Child.
