Pressure growing on Ngapuhi negotiations

Pressure is mounting for action on the Ngapuhi treaty settlement.
The Government is considering what action to take over demands by mandated negotiation group Tuhoronuku for changes to the body which is supposed to take over the talks.
Te Kotahitanga co-chair Pita Tipene says Tuhoronuku is testing the patience of Treaty Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson and it’s time to hand control to the structure designed by both Te Kotahitanga and Tuhoronku through last year’s Maranga Mai process.
But Tuhoronku chair Hone Sadler says his group’s concerns were ignored in Maranga Mai and the proposed structure ignores the modern reality of the country’s largest tribe.
A spokesperson for Mr Finlayson told Radio New Zealand the Crown had not withdrawn its recognition of Tuhoronuku's mandate, and ministers are still considering the amendments it proposed to the recommended mandate structure.
