Deluge hits Tairawhiti
Gisborne District Council has declared a state of emergency after a month’s worth of rain fell in one day.
There was flooding to parts of Gisborne and further north. Some areas were evacuated including parts of Uawa.
Councillor Meredith Akuhata Brown says there were concerns about slips on the roads.
Welfare centres are now being established for people forced from their homes.
She says with COP26 going on now in Glasgow its a timely reminder that climate change is real.
“What a wake up call we’ve got in front of us right now, this severe rain that is causing concern through this region, so we need to understand this climate change and do what we need to do but also support whānau suffering at this time,” she says.
Meredith Akuhata Brown says people should stay home and not go sightseeing in the flooded areas.
