Trustees keen to move treaty powhiri

Waitangi National Trust Board chair Pita Paraone says a consensus is emerging and it's time to move the powhiri for guests for Waitangi Day commemorations to the Bay of Islands.

Maori members of the board met yesterday to consider the steps needed to shift the powhiri from Te Tii Marae across the river on the Treaty Grounds.

He says a large number of people in the north including members of the Te Tii Marae committee, have approached board members in the wake of this year's shambles at the marae.

He says there will be a discussion with the marae next month before a final decision is made.
