No Hikairo welcome mat for minister

A member of Ngati Hikairo is accusing Maniapoto negotiator Nanaia Mahuta of making a serious cultural booboo by inviting the Treaty Negotiations Minister to Kawhia without informing the them.
Christopher Finlayson was in the area yesterday to meet Maniapoto elders and negotiators and visit sites of significance to that iwi.
Some Ngati Hikairo members mounted a noisy protest outside the bowling club where a meeting was being held.
Gareth Seymour says anyone who comes down the one road into Kawhia enters Ngati Hikairo land.
"For Nanaia as the negotiator there's a booboo here related to tikanga. We have an obligation. The obligation is for Ngati Hikairo to do the formalites, the powhiri, the whakatau, particularly for manuhiri tuarangi," he says.
Nanaia Mahuta says Ngati Maniapoto is working hard to conclude its treaty settlement, and Ngati Hikairo needs to go through a mandate process if it wants to start its own negotiations.
