Fresh start needed for Oranga Tamariki Bill.

Maori Party co-leader Marama Fox says Social Development Minister Anne Tolley needs to start again with her rewrite of the Children, Young Persons, and Their Families Act.
Parliament’s social services committee is currently scrutinising the reform bill, which provides the framework for the new Ministry for Vulnerable Children.
Mr Tolley has asked the committee to rename the Act the Oranga Tamariki Act to reflect the changes that are taking place through the overhaul of care and protection.
Ms Fox says given the criticism the bill is getting from everyone from iwi to police to social workers to the Law Society, it’s a cosmetic change.
"If this legislation has helicoptered in Maori words, then it is wrong from the start. We should be building this legislation and building this ministry for a kaupapa Maori model for a Maori purpose, and that is not what’s happened. It is just broken and wrong and everybody’s been saying start again," she says.
