Maori Art Market shows full spectrum of creation
The Maori Art Market opens with a powhiri at the Wharewaka on Wellington’s waterfront this evening.
The annual celebration was set for last November until Ruaumoko intervened, but now the ground has stopped shaking carvers, weavers, painters and artists of every stripe can lay out their wares.
Carver and ta moko artist Rangi Kipa says the Toi Maori-run event is one he always looks forward to.
"It’s the leading Maori art fair that we manage and we control. There are no external galleries. It’s all stuff the artists themselves have put in and is anyone wants to see the best stuff that’s where they should be heading this weekend because it will be a great opportunity to see the spectrum of Maori art," he says.
