Ministry boosts Ngai Tahu investment in youth


South Island iwi Ngai Tahu has won government funding for a programme to support its rangatahi in leadership and cultural development.
Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu and the Ministry of Youth Development will each invest $50,000 in a series of wananga to grow the cultural, technological, and leadership capacity of rangatahi as well as teach life skills in a Ngai Tahu context.
Chief executive Arihia Bennett says the runanga has been running rangatahi leadership programmes for several years, but the partnership means it can offer them to more whanau around the takiwa.
The runanga hopes to build on the partnership to develop more co-investment agreements with the government.
Some of the programmes Ngai Tahu currently supports for rangatahi include; Manawa Hou, Te Ara Whakatipu, Rangatahi Reo, Tu Toka Tu Ariki, Digital Technology Wananga, Rangatahi Tu Meke and marae wananga.
