RNZ scholarship honours broadcast tohunga Henare Te Ua
The late broadcaster Henare Te Ua is to be remembered with a new internship aimed at encouraging a new generation of Maori journalists to bring Maori stories to the mainstream.
Mr Te Ua from Ngati Porou started his radio career in 1956.
During the 1980s and 90s he led Radio New Zealand's Te Reo o Aotearoa unit for Maori and Pacific broadcasting.
RNZ head of content Carol Hirschfeld says the one-year internship will be an opportunity for a young Maori journalist or graduate with strong language and cultural skills to work and train within the organisation.
"Through having that person within our general staff, we would also benefit greatly from the networks and their knowledge of te reo and tikanga among all of our general reporters. We think it's a really exciting opportunity and it was a wonderful opportunity also to honour the extraordinary contribution of Henare (Te Ua)," says Carol Hirschfeld.
