Paoa-Whatua alliance for future generations

The executive director of Ngati Paoa says the east Auckland iwi's relationship with neighbour Ngati Whatua Orakei needs to be based in traditional values.
The two tribes renewed a 180 year old peace treaty on Saturday as they try to set aside a bitter battle ove cross claims that had them facing each other last year in the High Court.
Hauauru Rawiri says the relationship, whether it be cultural or commercial, needs to be based ona solid foundations of respect.
He says the kawenata ceremony evoked a mix of joy and hope.
"When Ngati Whatua Orakei got up at the powhiri I could see our mokopuna standing directly behind them and that's what it's for, for our future generations to work together in whatever capacity it may be," Mr Rawiri says.
The iwi are still waiting to judgment from the high Court.
