Budgeting service goes begging
The Mangere Budgeting Services Trust has turned to garage sales to keep its services going.
Director Darryl Evans says while the organisation survived the latest funding round of the sector, securing continued support for its Mangere and Otara services, its Tuakau service was turned down.
He says what’s pushing people to seek help from budgeting services is high rents, and it’s the same reason families are moving out to places on Auckland’s fringe like Tuakau.
"We’re desperately trying to raise enough money to keep the Tuakau Centre open because we are in the town local Maori and iwi embrace us. We're working with the local schools and the Tuakau Youth Centre for example, so we are already there so I don't understand why MSD want to reinvent the wheel when we're there, we're established and we've got the resopurces and more importantly we have gotthe respect of our local families," says Darryl Evans.
The next Mangere Budget Centre garage sale is November 19 at its Mahunga Drive premises.
