Maori Party to pick Te Tai Hauauru candidate

The Maori Party’s candidate for Te Tai Hauauru will come from Taranaki – but just who won’t be known until a meeting of members tomorrow.
The contenders have both had long service in local government.
Howie Tamati from Te Atiawa, a former New Plymouth district councillor, is well know throughout the electorate for his international career in rugby league and his subsequent work with Sport Taranaki in youth and community development.
Debbie Ngarewa-Packer is a former deputy mayor of South Taranaki, chief executive of Ngati Ruanui and chairs both the Ngati Ruanui and Nga Rauru commercial arms.
The winner of tomorrow’s contest will be up against Labour’s Adrian Rurawhe, who despite a low profile with the wider public enjoys strong support through his connection to the Ratana movement.
