Tipa Mahuta confirmed in Waikato governance role

Nga Hau E Wha constituency councillor Tipa Mahuta has been unanimously returned as deputy chair of Waikato Regional Council.

Ms Mahuta had been touted as a potential Maori Party candidate against her sister Nanaia in the Hauraki Waikato seat, but expressed no public interest in a shift to national politics.

The new council chair is Waipa mayor Alan Livingston, who co-chaired the council-iwi Healthy Rivers Wai Ora committee in the last term.

He says he will focus on effective teamwork between all councillors to advance the best interests of the region.

The council includes four former mayors.
