Prison plan proof of prejudice

A multi-billion dollar spend up on prisons shows where the Government is putting its priorities .., and its not Maori development.
That’s the view of the chief executive of the National Urban Maori Authority, Lance Norman, who is frustrated at the amount being poured into negative spending.
Corrections Minister Judith Collins has announced a plan to add another 1800 prison beds that could add $2.5 million over five years to the cos to locking people up.
Mr Norman says when Maori talk about creating whanau programmes to steer people away from prison, they are told there is no more money.
"But yet for some reason when there is a prison, a new hospital or someone steals a billion dollars from Canterbury Finance, there is money that comes out straight away, so clearly there is prejudicial treatment of issues, relating to Maori, which is hugely disappointing," he says
