Te Matawai top priority for university tauira

Maori students from the country’s university’s are descending on Wellington for their annual hui, Te Huinga Tauira o Te Mana Akonga.
Elijah Pue from Ngai Tauira, Victoria University’s Maori students association, says it’s a chance for the 300 participants to compare notes on some of the spiritual, emotional, financial and political challenges to getting higher education.
High on the agenda is how students can find reasonably priced accommodation during a period they will be studying hard and earning little, and also the future shape of te reo Maori.
"We’ve got Te Matawai which of course the minister has announced. We are going to debate what that means for us because of course we are going to take that forward as leaders of tomorrow and we need to know how Te Matawai is going to work," Mr Pue says
The hui starts tomorrow, and as well as debates, sports and kapa haka competitions, there will be a mystery tour of the capital.
