Bishop scaremongering over Hato Petera
The principal of Hato Petera is accusing the Bishop of Auckland, Patrick Dunn, of scaremongering in an effort to close Auckland’s only remaining Maori boarding school
Bishop Dunn has launched a consultation process about the future of the school, citing financial problems and disunity between the various bodies with responsibility for it.
Principal John Matthews the first consultation meeting last night heard passionate calls for the school to continue.
He says the board of trustees, the company looking after its hostels, and past pupils will make a united stand against its closure.
Mr Matthews says the school is breaking even and no longer in debt.
Academic rates are positive and consistently solid, and Hato Petera provides a basic but full curriculum with a participation rate above 80 percent.
