Zero waste marae effort rewarded
A group that helps marae to reduce their landfill waste to zero has won a prestigious international award.
Para Kore was given this year's Energy Globe Award for New Zealand at a ceremony in Auckland yesterday.
General manager Jacqui Forbes says Para Kore started in 2009 with a pilot project on three marae, and it now supports over 120 marae across Aotearoa to reduce waste through recycling, composting and smarter purchasing.
The awards attracted more than 1500 project submissions from 170 countries.
The jury said landfills and backyard burning of rubbish pose huge environmental challenges in New Zealand, leading to air and waterway pollution.
