MWWL wins cross-ministry support
The Maori Women’s Welfare League has secured an integrated contract with the Health, Education and Social Development Ministries that will allow it to deliver a more holistic service to at-risk families.
President Prue Kapua says it gives the organisation more say in the outcomes it will deliver.
She says the league has a long history in delivering social services, and it has a network of experienced kaimahi and volunteers.
"On a voluntary basis we do this through our branches, whether it's support through prisons. In some areas our branches have very good relationships with some of the CYFS people, with the police for example, so they are used to go into certain situations. We are encouraging this to happen at a community level all around the country.
Ms Kapua says the Maori Women’s Welfare League tends to get government contracts for high risk problems, but it also needs to be available for all the other challenges whanau face.
