Mauri model shared with Maoli
Auckland University engineering lecturer Kepa Morgan is treating his Nga Pae o Te Maramatanga Fulbright Scholarship as a two way street.
He's in Hawaii to share his mauri model for planning and decision-making, and he will also spend time in Colorado and Arizona.
Dr Morgan says the Hawaiians have a similar but different concept, so the idea has relevance internationally.
He's working with students on applications including managing fish ponds, and he also wants to do a comparative study on the impact of live weapons training on an island off Maui.
"That's an anthropagenic disaster we wanrt to compare to the impact of the Rena grounding and see what cultural values, cultural indicators come through in the parallel comparisons," Mr Morgan says.
He developed the mauri framework based on the challenges to large development schemes made in early Waitangi Tribunal claims, and says it ensures indigenous world views can be explained and understood by decision makers.
