Strategic thinking puts Maori on Waitakere ticket
One of the Maori candidates chasing seats on the Waitakere Local Board says it’s not enough just to get one Maori on the board if there is to be real change.
Paula Bold Wilson is one of four Maori on the eight-strong Henderson-Massey Labour ticket.
The mother of six who has Te Arawa whakapapa says her work managing the Waitakere Community Law Service has given her an insight into how council works or doesn’t work for Maori whanau in west Auckland.
"I was just frustrated and thought I do have a good feel for what is happening out in the Henderson-Massey area, I am commited to making a difference. Part of it too was about the short term projects council will fund, and if we really want to make a difference we have to be strategic in our thinking, we need to have a long term vision, and we need to think outside the box because what is happening now wasn’t making any changes," Mrs Wilson says.
