Solomon to step down as Ngai Tahu chair
Sir Mark Solomon is calling it quits as head of Ngai Tahu.
In a statement yesterday, he said a change in the executive at the Kaikoura runanga over administrative processes and practices means he won’t seek re-election as its representative on Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu.
That means his role as kaiwhakahaere will end later this year, once the new Kaikoura executive is elected.
The former foundry worker has headed the South Island tribe since 1998, the same year it finalised its $170 million settlement.
He survived a period of destabilisation several years ago, and consolidated his position with his resolute leadership after the Canterbury earthquakes, with the tribe emerging as a major player in the Christchurch rebuild.
However problems resurfaced in recent months, and he resigned as chair of the Kaikoura runanga several weeks ago after opponents forced a vote of no confidence.
