Civil Defence boosts marae readiness

Northland Civil Defence is offering marae throughout Te Taitokerau help to develop emergency preparedness plans.
Spokesperson Alastair Wells says the plans identify potential hazards and the resources that may be available to vulnerable people in the community.
Developing links with emergency agencies is also a priority.
Marae have a key role in unexpected events and are a focal point for their whanau and so the preparedness plans are a way of enhancing the resilience they already have.
Wells says Maori communities have been under-represented in civil defence, and the project is an opportunity to work more closely with individual marae or clusters of marae.
