Redress falls short of compensation
A big morning in parliament today for lower North Island tribes, with first readings of the Taranaki, Te Atiawa and Rangitane o Manawatu claim settlement bills.
Te Tai Hauauru MP Adrian Rurawhe says there will be cross-party support for the bills, as parliament tries to address the wrongs of the past.
He says it’s again a testament to the generosity of iwi in accepting redress rather than full compensation.
"Imagine Rangitane who lost 250,000 acres. At a minimal cost of around $20,000 an acre in today's terms that's a huge amoung and they're getting a financial redress of $13.5 million. That is a fraction of what it is worth," Mr Rurawhe says.
