Te Arawa FOMA raises climate change awareness
One of the largest clusters of Maori landowners is calling on its members to wake up to the implications of climate change on their future operations.
Te Arawa FOMA this week held a special conference on the issue to share information on what it says is sustainable economic change that doesn’t cost the earth.
Deputy chair Te Taru White says as managers of intergenerational assets, they need to be aware the issue could become critical within in the next generation, given predictions that the world will heat up by at least two degrees at current emission rates.
"Not only will we see coastal level rises. So some of our land bases on the coastal areas could be in some trouble but can we continue to do the business we are doing now or will we need to prepare for the change. No point waiting till it happens. We need to be prepared, have strategies for it and manage that change. What are the risks for forestry what is the implication for agricultural and what are the implications for that business," says Te Taru White.
