Te Matarae leads Te Arawa charge

Te Matarae i Orehu came out the winner at the Waiariki regional kapa haka competition held this weekend at Rotorua’s Energy Events Centre.
That gives the runner up at last year’s Te Matatini nationals the chance to improve at next year’s championship in Hastings.
Leader Wetini Mitai-Ngatai says his group had come off stage feeling satisfied with its effort, which came after three months of hard training.
The other Te Arawa teams to book their tickets to Hastings were Ngati Rangiwewehi, Tuhourangi Ngati Wahiao, Te Piki Kotuku o Rongomai, and Te Hikuwai.
The trophy for best new group went to Ngati Kea/Ngati Tuara.
