Boost for Maori development training in Taitokerau
One of the longest-running Maori development qualifications will be taught in the north.
The University of Auckland’s Te Tohu Huanga Maori Business Development Programme will hold weekly classes at the new Waitangi Museum for its two-year, part-time postgraduate diploma in business in Maori development.
The programme’s Maori dean, Chellie Spiller, says in the past they’ve tried to do it by video link, but having people on the ground is more effective.
She says 30 people have signed up and a similar number who will do the course at the Auckland campus, are leaders and managers who are already grappling with the challenges around Maori assets.
"They want to move consciously as kaitiaki and it's not very straightforward, it comes with a lot of challenges such as how do you balance this quest to be a kaitiaki and hand over an asset in better shape than we received it and it's not just profitability or commercial shape, it's holitically well in all its dimensions, how do you make those kind of decisions as well as being commercially sound," Dr Spiller says.
Over the past two decades more than 270 people have gone through the Maori development course.
