Sport Waitakere kaupapa Maori programmes boosted
Auckland Council is to fund Sport Waitakere’s kaupapa Maori programme He Oranga Poutama ki Tāmaki Makaurau for the next two years.
The programme, which is available for all Aucklanders, aims to increase opportunities for whanau to participate in sport and traditional physical recreation, to revitalise and develop traditional Maori sport and physical activity, and to help kaiwhakahaere or administrators participate as leaders in their communities.
The $60,000 a year from the new regional sports and recreation grant fund will also contribute to a new youth leadership programme, He Manukura Apuarangi.
Mauri Tu, a programme that tries to increase the involvement in sports and physical activity of primary and secondary school students, will benefit as well.
Councillor Christine Fletcher, the chair of the parks, recreation and sports committee, says He Oranga Poutama is proven and successful
“We are very pleased Auckland Council sees the value in supporting kaupapa-Māori programmes like these,” she says.
Sport Waitakere chief executive Lynette Adams says more than 12,000 people participated in the organisation’s programmes last year, 52 percent of them Maori.
She says the funding will allow Sport Waitakere to expand the programmes across Auckland.
