New home for Waikato Maori women’s refuge

Housing New Zealand has provided a new home under its community group housing scheme for Waikato Women’s Refuge’s Te Whakaruruhau.
When Te Whakaruruhau opened in 1986 it was the first Maori refuge, providing safe housing and advocacy for wahine Maori.
Social Housing Minister Paula Bennett says the original property has become unsuitable because of its location and configuration, and the new five-bedroom home is well situated for medical services, supermarkets, public transport, parks and other community infrastructure.
Housing New Zealand provides 86 community group houses to women’s refuges and another 1506 properties for other community organisations to rent around New Zealand.
