Maunga car free by new year
Work has started on closing of the summit of Maungawhau Mt Eden to all motor vehicles.
The carpark at the bottom of the maunga is being reconfigured, with access restored to Clive Rd, and preliminary work is starting on installing bollards at the entrance and exit to the summit roads.
When the work is completed in January the road will only be available for people with limited mobility, who will need to obtain keypad access code which lowers the bollards so they can drive up.
The Tupuna Maunga o Tamaki Makaurau Authority says the tihi or summit is being returned to a space free of motor vehicles to honour its cultural and historical significance and create an enhanced, safer experience for pedestrians and cyclists.
