Waikato Tainui spokesperson Rahui Papa on Paakiwaha
Waikato Tainui leader Rahui Papa says the presentation to parliament of a 10,000 signature petition organised by Otorohanga College students, should step up the pressure for a national day of commemoration of the New Zealand Wars.
Iwi caught up in the wars 150 years ago have been holding ceremonies and re-enactments, and at each there has been a call for a wider commemoration matching the attention paid to New Zealanders who fought overseas.
Rahui Papa says the land wars is about facing up to our past. It wasn't just about Maori dying but also colonial troops as well. He say's we want to remember everyone that had those conflicts.
