Chair Selwyn Parata says Darrin Apanui is leaving to look for opportunities overseas.
He says in his six years in the job Mr Apanui has put the organisation in a strong financial position and built lasting relationships with funders and government agencies.
He has also increased its international presence, with leading teams taking part in major events in the United States, the United Kingdom including the Edinburgh Tattoo, Europe, Asia and the Pacific.
