Fletcher Building shareholders copped an earful from opponents of one of the company’s developments when they turned up at their annual meeting today.
Tangata whenua and supporter picketed the Sky City Convention Centre to protest its plans to build almost 500 homes on the Otuataua stonefields near Auckland Airport.
Brendan Corbett from Save Our Unique Landscape says the group wants the area near Ihumatao papakainga protected as public open space.
He says the development within the last remnants of rural Mangere does not match the criteria for a special housing area because it lacks infrastructure and amenities.
He says a viable alternative would be developing 33.hectares of Auckland Council-owned land along nearby Ascot Road.
Fletcher Building says the development isn’t on sites of cultural and geological significance, and it has the backing of Maori leaders recognise Auckland's need for housing.
It says 48 houses or 10 percent would be affordable, as specified in the legislation.
