Iwi alerts bank to tukutuku mystery

The Reserve Bank is trying to pin down just where the tukutuku panel featured on the $10 note comes from.
Bank governor Graham Wheeler says the East Coast design depicting the Milky Way was found in Te Hau ki Turanga at the National Musuem Te Papa, but it’s not originally from that meeting house.
He has met with Rongowhakaata Iwi Trust and Te Hau ki Turanga Trust in the hope of finding more about the panel and its weavers.
Rongowhakaata chair George Ria says his trust is keen to help, and he’s pleased the bank has removed the mistaken attribution from its website.
Another tukutuku panel from the house will feature on the new $20 note to be released next year.
