Visions for education sought from kura
Education Minister Hekia Parata says the Education Act is no longer fit for purpose and needs a complete rewrite.
Ms Parata has launched a six week consultation on reforming the law that set in place Tomorrow’s Schools 26 years ago.
She says last year’s Taskforce on Regulations Affecting School Performance laid the basis for the reform, and she now wants answers to other questions.
"There’s no one place where our over-arching goals for education in New Zealand are set so there is an invitation for kura to set what they think the goals should be for the education system. We are also saying how should the government set its priority for what should happen to meet those goals," Ms Parata says.
The consultation is also asking how schools can get more flexibility, and whther there should be ways to intervene earlier in schools that are struggling.
