New Maori curator for Toi o Tamaki
Auckland Art Gallery’s new Maori curator says he’s keen to put his own stamp on the institution and develop shows that appeal to both Maori and general audiences.
Nigel Borell joins Toi o Tamaki from Auckland War Memorial Museum, where he has been associate curator Maori.
He says his own background as a practicing artist will also contribute to the way he does the job.
"I’ve always had that desire to want to create and want to learn and to tap into our creative thinking, to tell us where we stand today, and that has led on to getting a better understanding of Maori art, Maori art history. It’s that creative urge at its essence that spurs me on and makes me interested in this area," he says.
Nigel Borell says the previous curator, Ngahiraka Mason, was a mentor to him and an inspirational figure for Maori in the arts.
