Mitimiti dance challenges perceptions
The creator of a new dance work opening in Auckland tonight says he wants to bring the environment of the Hokianga into an urban environment.
Mitimiti has taken Jack Grey five years to develop, and involves collaborations with Aboriginal, Guam and Native American dancers as well as Atamira Maori Dance Theatre and artist Lisa Reihana.
He says it's involved multiple journeys to Mitimiti, where his grandmother came from, including helping to restore a whare as part of Marae DIY.
"We're definitely challenging people's perceptions about what to expect and that has been the driving force behind this multi-media, sensorial, interactive, participatory performance, so it's not like any other show where you go in and sit down and watch the performance, it's where you cross the threshold into different protocols," Grey says.
Mitimiti runs at Q Theatre until Saturday.
