Auckland Mayor Len Brown says he can see ways mana whenua could benefit from the special housing area being developed near Ihumatao in Mangere.
The council held a sitting last week at Makaurau Marae in the centre of the historic village, with members of the Save Our Unique Landscape group holding a protest outside.
Mr Brown says he welcomed the opportunity to talk to whanau concerned about the development.
He says developer Fletcher Residential is open to recognising the cultural significance of the land and working in with Tanui and the Ihumatao community.
" Looking to find ways to provide opportunities for the regeneration for some of the housing in Ihumatao. Possibility of shared ownership schemes and Fletchers being innovative around how we might bring up Ihumatao at the same time as new housing areas develop. All that sort of stuff. Theres a lot of water to go under this bridge and a lot of korero " he says.
Len Brown says he’s willing to assist where he can in finding a common way forward.
