Hapu forced into settlement

A Hawkes Bay hapu has filed an urgent application with the Waitangi Tribunal in a bid to stop this week the signing of the Heretaunga-Tamatea settlement for claims in the Hastings area.
Ngati Hinemanu me Ngati Paki Heritage Trust chair Jordan Haines-Winiata says the crown is trying to wrap its WAI 1835 claim into its claim with the He Toa Takatini cluster of marae.
He says Ngati Hinemanu ki Mokai Patea and Ngati Paki did not give He Toa Takatini their mandate, and they have overlapping claims in Heretaunga-Tamatea.
Mr Haines-Winiata says if all of the Kaweka and Gwavas Crown Forest Licensed lands west of Hastings are included in the the settlement, there won't be sufficient redress available for his hapu's settlement.
